“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” - Romans 13:11-14
EXPLORATION
In most times people get either excited, provoked or challenged after a sermon or teaching enough to make a decision to change for the better. Unfortunately, not long after, we find them going against their decisions and thereby returning to the evil ways they had one denounced. When such teaching and preaching comes up again, they go through the same round of repenting and making these decisions all over again. In this week’s digest Paul makes us understand that this ought not to be so.
INSPIRATION
The eternal hope of the believer is being with the Lord Jesus in the everlasting kingdom of God. So the preaching and teaching of the word of God we receive are to prepare us for the second coming of Christ when our salvation will be perfected. Paul says, “…knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out f sleep for now is our salvation nearer that when we believed.” -Romans 13:11. He reminds us of how close the second coming of Christ is nearer that ever before and for that matter perfecting our salvation. The spiritual condition by which many Christians rise and fall every time by making decisions and not keeping their decision should cease. This he likens to spiritual sleep out of which he is calling unsteady Christians to awake from. He further said “…The night is far spent, the day is at hand…” Romans 13:12. NOW is the time to DECIDE
Paul gives practical ways by which an unsteady Christian should awake from spiritual slumber and he says “…Let us walk honestly as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.” Romans 3:13.
Let us do a bit of word study:
This week: Without any doubt, some of these evils would have been addressed during either a bible study, pulpit sermon, seminar, Sunday school session or at any other Christian forum and each time you made a decision to repent and turn away from your error, do you still keep going back to them and keep repenting without real and genuine determination to totally turn away from them? It is long overdue for you to do so bearing in mind that we are in the last days and the end is closer than we ever thought. Fulfilled prophecies are pointers to this fact: Search the scriptures and think again.
Paul says: “…put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lust thereof.” Romans 13:14. This talks about the quality of the life of Jesus and the Bible says: “If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation (way of living) the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”- Ephesians 4:21-24.
I love this very verse! The bible says: “ABSTAIN from all appearance of evil.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:22. And in the book of Colossians it says: “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” - Colossians 3:5. This is a sober moment of decision to continue either to fall and rise spiritually and possibly go to hell or firmly decide to remain steadfast in the Lord and never slumber again spiritually. Finally, we want to believe that after reading this week’s Weekly Digest you will stand up to your SPIRIT and say: “But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.” - Hebrews 10:39. The Holy Spirit will uphold you. AMEN!!!
Remember the Bible says: “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” - 1 John 2:4-6
