Praying in the Power of the Holy Spirit (part 2)

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." - Romans 8:26-27

EXPLORATION

There are some key points Paul reveals to us here about our prayer life and the involvement of the Holy Spirit which are as follows:

  1. That the Spirit helps our inadequacies in prayer
  2. Many times, we are ignorant of what to pray for as we ought.
  3. The Spirit prays on our behalf - He intercedes for us.
  4. He investigates the state of our mind and properly guides and directs our mind in praying.
  5. He can do this because HE is perfect in knowledge.

INSPIRATION

Prayer means talking with God, telling HIM what we desire him to do for us or thanking Him for what HE has done for us. But generally, people pray all kinds of prayer according to their carnal and selfish desires. This happens especially when a person is not born again or does not know the will of God. In most cases, such people end up not having their prayer answered and consequently go around looking for help where there is no help. The reason is that they do not know the spiritual conditions that should be met and the way God requires us to pray in order to get results.

Ephesians 6:18 commanded us to be prayerful: "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints" - Ephesians 6:18

No one can pray in the Spirit except he/she has the Spirit of God, and no one can have the Spirit of God without receiving Jesus as Lord and Savor of his life.( John 14:6) This is simply because we can only pray to God in the name of Jesus. (John 14:13-14)

"And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." - John 14:13-14

Man is totally ignorant of the ways of God. Paul says: "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." -1 Corinthians 2:10-11

For a person to know what another has to offer, he should know about the person so that he can know what he can request from him. This is also the case with God. A person needs to know the mind or the word of God before he can know the kind of thing to ask from God. So, he has to be born of the Spirit of God. The inspiration and inner power that enables a Christian to pray is the Spirit of God in the believer.

"Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts." - 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (2 Corinthians 5:5)

The word earnest in the context of this scripture above (2 Corinthians 1:21-22) means Eager, Sincere, and Serious. This shows that the Spirit of God in us is Serious, Sincere, and Eager to inspire and strengthen us to pray. That is, to guide and direct our prayer aright; according to the will of God so that we can receive answers to our prayer.

HE is able to do this because HE knows the mind of God. Above everything else, HE makes intercession for us. To help us know the will of God the Spirit gives us the desire for the word of God so that in knowing the word of God we shall be able to pray aright.

"And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him." -1 John 5:14-15

A  Christian cannot pray indeed without the enabling power, guidance and help of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, every serious minded Christian must do everything to ensure the indwelling and infilling of the Holy Spirit at all times no matter what it takes.

This week: We have to understand that there are spiritual conditions that ensures the continual presence and operation of the Holy Spirit in the believer that is: To abstinence from every known sin, purity of heart, forgiving others their faults, avoiding any form of envy and jealousy. Fellowship with the brethren always, endeavoring to obey the word of God always desisting from anger. This shows that when a Christian begins to lose interest in praying or does not have the inspiration to pray without ceasing, it means that he would have grieved the Spirit of God in one way or the other. The bible says: "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." - Ephesians 4:30

Remember the Bible says: "Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit." -2 Corinthians 5:5 (KJV)

We love You!

God bless.
