"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."- Matthew 7:15-20
EXPLORATION
The function of the prophet was not merely the disclosure of the future but also includes the exposition and application of the law, that is; the declaration of the will of God. it thus contained two elements - THE MORAL (or DOCTRINAL) and the PREDICTIVE. So the prophet had a practical office to discharge.
It was part of his commission to show the people of God their transgressions (Isa. 58:1; Ezek. 22:2; 43:10; Micah 3:8). They were therefore pastors (i.e. Ministerial monitors) of the people of God. It was their duty to reprove and admonish, to denounce prevailing sins, to warn the people with the terror of divine judgment, and to call them to repentance. They also brought the message of consolation and pardon (Isa. 40: 1-2).
INSPIRATION
One sometimes wonders why people are so easily deceived by false prophets. Jesus explains this and said, "For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." - Matt. 24:24. It is a pity to remark that the same is true today that many are only seeking signs and wonders and not the salvation of their souls. (Mark 8:35-37).
It therefore means that knowing a true prophet or minister of God is not by the signs and wonders he performs. Jesus said, "Ye shall know them by their fruits." Matt. 7:16,20.
A man of God (i.e. the prophet) should show, by practical, holy living the way God expects people to live in obedience and reverence to God. His life therefore must be a shining example and indeed a challenge to the people of what God demands by:
But here is a warning to those who make false profession of the Christian faith "Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire." -Matt. 7:19.
Beloved, it's your time to be vigilant. As the economy looks unstable many will proclaim themselves to be a prophet of God to take advantage of the situation. Some will even succeed and gather thousands of followers into their "ministries" making them appear to be legitimate. Now is the time seek the Lord and read His word, the Bible that you might find HIM and know HIM. Take time to worship, study and meditate on the WORD of GOD and attend the Church. Be vigilant. Remember, the Word says, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." (Matthew 7:20) and "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1).
