The Resurrected Life (A New Life in Christ)

"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life..." - Romans 6:1-11

EXPLORATION

Jesus Christ died for our sin on the cross of Calvary, and was buried: But on the third day he rose from the dead with a glorified body, different from the one with which he died. Briefly, here is the difference between the natural body and a glorified body:

  • (a)    The natural body is subject to the laws of nature, could be tired, hungry and feel pain. Can not disappear and its movement could be obstructed by physical objects. Could yield to temptation commit a sin and die physically. 1 Corinthians 15:41-44, 52-57.
  • (b)   But a glorified body can move into a room with closed doors, defy the laws of nature, cannot be enticed by the world and cannot commit any sin or die physically. John 20:19,  Acts 1:9, Revelation  21:4

INSPIRATION

In the text above for this week's lesson, Paul tries to show a similarity between the crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ by the power of God and the destruction (death) of the old sinful life of a believer with the regeneration into a new life by the same power of God. This changed life is free from sin, spiritually powerful and Christ-like. John. 1:12-13, 2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 John 2:6.

The Bible establishes that as Jesus gave up the ghost and died, so the believer in Christ gives up his evil and wicked ways and becomes dead to sin. It then means that as a person is physically dead and will not respond to the happenings around him because he is dead indeed, in the same token, the Christian must not respond to the temptation and lust to commit any sin because he has been resurrected from death in sins and trespasses to a new life of righteousness and holiness in Jesus.

The Bible says: "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:" -Ephesians 2:1-2

"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." -Romans 6:3-4, (1 John 3:8-10)

Jesus Christ resurrected a changed being with a different body and a new life. Believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior puts to death our sinful nature and implants in us a new nature and life that hates sin and unrighteousness.

"For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin." - Romans 6:5-6

Water Baptism by immersion symbolizes this transforming experience of a new life in Christ. It therefore becomes important for every believer to observe this ordinance of the church of Christ. By this, the believer makes a public confession of his faith and commitment to Christ and identifies himself with his death and resurrection.

"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." - Matthew 28:18-20, (Mark 16:15-17)

Jesus said "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven." - Matthew 10:32-33

"Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God." - Romans 6:9-10

Beloved! This week: we have to understand that, death is a spiritual state of living in sin out of which we are redeemed when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:1-2) We are delivered from the power of sin and made dead to sin ONCE as Christ died only once. (Romans 6:10) Having been delivered thus, we are to live for God daily in holiness and righteousness. (Ephesians 4:20-24) It's your time to act and do that which God expects of you daily. I pray that the Spirit of God will strengthen you to do this in Jesus name. Amen!

Remember the Bible says: "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men." -Titus 3:5-8
